Betas & Cheerleaders & Multiple Works
Call for BETAS & CHEERLEADERS
HELLO & WELCOME! We are so grateful to you for helping our participants out! Please comment below with the following information:
I want to cheerlead!
I want to beta!
The Beta Run-down
Participants, we hope you all are brimming with ideas and know just what you want to write/make art/vid! Please remember that we expect all fic, art, and vids to be beta'd and to reflect DSSS's standards for well-crafted giftworks. Remember also to leave enough time between beta and deadline to edit your work!
As always, what you're making and who you're making it for must remain ANONYMOUS until Reveal. That means DO NOT ask your recipient to be your beta or cheerleader! It would be best for beta readers not to be participants in DSSS at all, but if it's necessary, please be circumspect!
If you need a beta & none of the offers in the comments below fits the bill, you're welcome to email the mods at dsss.admin at gmail.com and we will post an anonymized beta request on your behalf.
All Works are DUE: Sunday, December 18, 11:59pm Chicago time.
DSSS Challenge rules
Dear Santa/Giftmaker letters
Multiple Works
Last, we have one important clarification about multiple works: you MAY, if you want to, create more than one giftwork for your recipient. The essential requirement is that everyone must write or make ONE well-crafted 1000-word story, an equivalent effort work of art, or a 1.5 minute vid. Once you manage that, you may then (optionally!) create bonus giftworks based on any of your recipient's requests. You are only required to create ONE giftwork that meets the challenge requirements. When we get to the uploading phase, we'll ask that primary works be uploaded first, so we know that every recipient has something of mininum length/artistic effort safely in the system. (More on uploading in December.)
Thanks again, and please drop us an email if you have any questions!

2. RayK, Fraser and Stella. Special areas of knowledge: Catholicism.
3. The kinds of betas you can do: I can beta for line, story, grammar and plot.
4. Things outside your comfort zone: No watersports, rape handwaved/depicted as positive, no kidfic.
5. I can be reached at jamethiel dot bane at gmail dot com
If anyone wants to ask me questions, have at it!

2. All of the characters. My favorite pairings are K/V, F/K, F/K/V, but any of them are fine. Fandoms: Due South, Trigger, Hard Core Logo, Slings & Arrows, Wilby Wonderful, BSG, (early) Durham County, (late) Flashpoint, Twitch City, Gunless.
3. Can beta for plot, grammar, story, line edits, canon, etc. I can use the track changes feature or insert comments/questions after paragraphs in the story--whichever you prefer.
4. Things outside your comfort zone: watersports, one partner underage, non-con (maybe). Other than those, I'm pretty much OK with anything.

1. Fic! And, well, I have no idea how to beta art but I'm willing to give non-artist, comic-fan preliminary feedback. *g*
2. The content you can beta: gen, het, slash, femslash, all ratings. I love all the characters, so, you know, feel free to send me that Gardino wingfic! *g* Special areas of knowledge: Texas, the Deep South, parts of Yukon Territory/Western Canada, basic police procedure, disability. Feel free to email and ask about crossovers or AU settings.
3. The kinds of betas you can do: line edit, plot, grammar, story edit. Note on file format: I use MS Word (.doc) or Open Office (.odt), with track changes and the comment feature turned on because it's easier on my busted arm. I tend to ask a LOT of questions and get very chatty with the text, but my turnaround time is generally pretty fast.
4. Things outside your comfort zone: noncon unless it's an offscreen part of the plot, character bashing, authorial misogyny, abusive kink, kidfic, Welsh slash, Turnbull slash (in my head, he and Frannie live happily ever after *g*). Feel free to ask first about anything you're doubtful about.
5. How to reach you directly: sageness at gmail dot com. Obviously, I'm going to be swamped with mod duties as the deadline looms near, but I'm happy to do betas as I have time. Just email me and ask!
CHEERLEADING!
I am absolutely happy to help brainstorm ideas and/or figure out plot points. I probably won't have much if any time to actively check in on your progress, but if you need someone to help puzzle out what happens in your story or what might go in your artwork, you're welcome to come find me. (Same content restrictions as above.)

1. Fic, art, vid? I'd say mostly fic.
2. The sorts of DSSS-relevant things you enjoy or would love to see exist. Hm, have to get back to that one.
3. Any favorite DS characters or genres you're particularly enthusiastic about. I'm generally most attracted to Fraser, Dief, and the Rays, and Welsh. But I dig Frannie and Elaine, too. I'm a little familiar with Slings & Arrows (could use a refresher there), Wilby Wonderful, Men With Guns, Buried On Sunday, Twitch City, and Gunless. I've seen Aspen Extreme and Getting Married In Buffalo Jump, but it's been a while. Also, I love AUs. Bring 'em on.
4. Things outside your comfort zone: Epic tragedy, any kind of onscreen non-con makes me a sad bunny. MPreg is kind of iffy, but I can sometimes handle it. Please no character-bashing. I'm fond of them all. Some kinds of kink, like watersports or most breathplay, or really rough S&M are not quite my thing. The majority of non-vanilla, though, I am okay with.
5. How to reach you directly so the DSSS participant can protect his/her anonymity. I can be had at savagehobbit at verizon.net, or at brigantine1 at livejournal.com
If anyone needs someone to bounce an idea off of, see how it looks through someone else's brain, or whether option A might be better than option B, I am ready to go with that.

1. Fic and/or vid
2. Sorry, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that?
3. Fraser, RayV, Turnbull, and RayK. And original characters of course!
4. Slash is the only thing really out of my comfort zone.

1. Fic, art, vid? fic
2. The content you can beta: just about everything
3. The kinds of betas you can do: grammar, sentence structure, canon, character
4. Things outside your comfort zone: scat, watersports, underage where one character is underage and one is not
5. How to reach you directly so the DSSS participant can protect his/her anonymity: haynes_rebecca at yahoo dot com

(Anonymous) 2011-11-06 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)1. Fic.
2. That it seems to have generated many years' worth of awesome fic? I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand the question.
3. I have a special place in my heart for Bob and Sympathetic!Stella, but I love, love, love all of the characters. My favorite types of stories are humor, kidfic, casefic and well done crack (Mpreg? Fashion-model!Welsh AU? BRING IT ON). I'm also reasonably fond of angst and tragedy--I love stories that tug at any emotional strings.
4. Non/dub-con, any kink that potentially involves harm (knifeplay, bloodplay, snuff, cannibalism, vivisectionism (*looks askance at Sherlock fandom* <.<'), breathplay etc.)

2. Check my fic index for characters/pairings I've written and feel I can beta-read well. If you have some other pairing, just ask me! I am probably not a good beta for K/V and F/V, though. Special knowledge: the biology of northern climates, dogsledding and winter camping, math.
3. I'm a fairly all-round beta, but plotting and structure is not my strong suit--I'm better at sentence-level and scene-level stuff. Also, I'm fairly good at grammar and spelling and can spot typos a mile off, but keep in mind that English isn't my native language, so I can have blind spots.
4. Am all right with consensual kink, death, apocalypse, and pairing break-ups, but please no character bashing, incest, non-con within the pairing, pairings with one person underage and another much older, or heavy jealousy.

I will be very busy with teaching for two weeks starting with the 12th of December, so that might not be a good time to ask me.
