Hello Seekrit Santas

This is a reminder that all prompts in the exchange are open for Treats. You do not have to have signed up to the exchange to contribute a treat and you can post treats right up until the collection closes on 1st January 2025.

We had a couple of pinch hitters this time around, so you might want to treat them a little something something 😉 I for one appreciate them stepping in, in a crunch [personal profile] mific and [personal profile] thisaintbc

Santa letters for each pinch hitter can be found below. They have waived the right to be anonymous for the purpose of treats. 😃

Treat away!

Hello Duesers,

This is your check in post. Assignments are due in 19 days. If you think you can't make that date, send me an email: dsssmod20@gmail.com so we can get the assignment out to pinch hitters.

Now is also the time you can create treats. Please only take on treats if you have finished your gift. I won't accept works if you have gifts outstanding.

Get in touch if you need anything.

Greetings all you wonderful dSSS people!

Firstly, primary gifts are due in 13 days -- If for some reason you can't make the deadline, email the mods ASAP at dsss.admin (at) gmail.com. Thank you kindly!

But if you're done with your gift work, and you want to give a little more to the community, then read on!

*** *** ***

We dSSS mods are delighted to announce the commencement of dSSS Treats! Treats are fun, small, seekrit, and 100% optional. If you only have time for your assigned work, no worries! Focus on that (please!). But those done making their assigned gifts, are free to drabble, drawble, vidlet, and podficlet!

How Treats work:

* Treats Deadline is December 31st!

* Post TREATS any time AFTER you post your assigned giftwork, up until 12/31/22, 11:59pm EST! Yes, we allow treats right up through New Years Eve!

* But please: YOU MUST POST YOUR ASSIGNED GIFTWORK FIRST. We review works as they are posted to keep track of unfulfilled assignments. POST YOUR ASSIGNED WORK FIRST.

Who are Treats for?

• Any dSSS registered participants, pinch hitters, and mods. When works go live, the "Guess the Creators!" post will list all gift creators, including pinch hitters.

• Your assigned recipient: dSSS 2022 companion pieces (for the gift you created). Complementary works only, not remixes. Questions? Email the mods.

• dSSS giftwork(s) companion pieces (for the gift someone received). Please ensure all Treats are complementary/companion works -- not remixes.

How do I know what to make?

Everyone's signup requests are visible now. So you can look at all the prompts! While assigned work must be in the requested format(s), Treats don't have to be. If a fic prompt inspires you to create art or podfic (and vice versa), have at it!

Do pinch hitters get to make requests?

If you were assigned a pinch-hit, please comment on this post with a request, so people who want to make you a Treat know what you like. (This doesn't guarantee you will get a Treat, though.)

Special Rules:

1. IMPORTANT: Carefully follow the special posting instructions for Treats in the next section.

2. Brevity is fine! No minimum word count or artistic effort.

3. Our standards for all dSSS works still include spelling and grammar. Treats that don't meet dSSS quality standards may be removed at the discretion of the mods. You are not required to have Treats beta-ed (because of the shorter time for Treat creation) – but we still strongly encourage you to have them beta-ed.

4. Other gift formats not named by a participant request, and relaxed length/effort requirements are the only rules changes for Treats. They must still respect the recipient's requested characters/relationships and any DNW info (including Dear Santa letters).

5. Art, vidlet, or podfic Treats must be sent to dSSS mods for approval. Like all dSSS works, Treats are SEEKRIT until Reveal!

Special AO3 upload instructions for Treats:

This is the Treats Addendum to the full-length posting instructions for dSSS gifts:

* Additional Tags: Enter "dSSS Treat" (plus any other relevant tags).

* Does this fulfill a challenge assignment? No! This is a Treat, not your assigned work! You've already uploaded your assigned work, so UNCHECK this box.

* Post to Collections. Make certain "dsss_2022" is entered here.

* Gift this work to: Enter the username of the recipient of your Treat here.

What recipient do you enter if your treat is a companion piece inspired by an {Anonymous} dSSS giftwork? Enter the recipient who received the inspiring work!

* After Reveal, you may edit in the revealed creator of the inspiring work as an additional recipient. (IMPORTANT: Do NOT enter "Anonymous" as the recipient! If you do, your Treat will be gifted to the AO3 user “Anonymous” – not your intended recipient!)

* This work...was inspired by another work. (Optional!) If you check this box, a window appears to enter information to link your Treat to the associated work in the AO3 which inspired you. You don’t have to use this, but you can if you want to. If you do use it, the creator of the original inspiring work will get an email notification that their work now has a companion piece. Also, the creator of the original inspiring work does not have to approve the “inspired by” link from their work to your companion piece – but if they want to, they can.

Companion Piece Permissions:

For dSSS, gifts are good, and more gifts are great! If you write your assigned recipient fic, a dSSS podficcer could record that story as a Treat for your recipient, or an artist could make cover art for your fic, etc. We mods figure, more gifts + more creativity = more Due South works, YAY! However, if you have concerns (e.g. you really, really don’t want anyone to record your story as a podfic), please email the mods. We'll reply with further instructions.

We hope everyone takes the possibility for more gifts in the spirit of December holidays’ gift-giving – but we will work with you to respect your comfort zone.

In summary:

Optional Treats are optional. Pinch hitters and mods should comment here to inform dSSSers of their requests and squicks/Do Not Writes. Everyone's requests are now viewable.

Treats can be posted up to midnight New Year's Eve, EST. Length and format rules are relaxed for Treats; nevertheless, you are strongly advised to have your work beta-ed. All other dSSS assigned gift requirements stand.

For ANY questions or concerns, please email us at dsss.admin AT gmail DOT com. This may be a little confusing, we know -- so just ask! And thanks for being awesome!

Defaulters MAY NOT post Treats (with some exceptions). Participants must fulfill their assignments for dSSS to succeed. The top priority is all participants posting their assigned dSSS works. It isn't fair to default, forcing the mods to scramble to find a pinch hitter (and the pinch hitter scrambling to create a gift matching a specific prompt on short notice), only to later create optional treats when you didn’t complete your originally assigned work. Hi, all you lovely dSSS participants!

A short reminder: primary giftworks are due in one week (well, 6 days) by 11:59 Chicago Time (Central Time, USA – or Greenwich Mean Time -6).

If you can’t make the deadline, notify the mods ASAP – email dsss.admin AT gmail DOT com. We must find a pinch-hitter to take over your assignment, so your recipient is not gift-less despite making a gift themselves.

Reminder: all primary giftworks must be beta'ed, whether text, visual art, or recorded. Please try to proofread your gift one more time after you've posted it, as well -- typos happen to the best of us, and AO3 can format things unexpectedly! :)

--------------------------

We dSSS mods are delighted to announce the commencement of dSSS Treats! Treats are fun, small, seekrit, and 100% optional.

If you only have time for your assigned work, no worries! Focus on that (please!). But those done making their assigned gifts, are free to drabble, drawble, vidlet, and podficlet! Here's how Treats work:

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for signing up to dSSS 2018 - our 15th year of exchanging due South fanworks!

Read on for dSSS: What You Need To Know (Assignments, Instructions, Not Required)

Assignments!

Everyone should have received their 2018 dSSS assignment email from AO3.

If you didn’t, please log into AO3 and check your "My Assignments" page. Your assignment should be listed there.

If you don’t see it there, email us mods at dsss.admin (at) gmail (dot) com ASAP.

If AO3 shows your assignment, but you didn't get the AO3 assignment email, check your spam or junk mail filter.

If it isn't there either, please let us know ASAP at dsss.admin (at) gmail (dot) com!

Instructions!

Reminders:

Your assigned recipient may have up to three requests. Choose only ONE of the requests to work on.

Your created fanwork is for the character/relationship in the recipient's AO3 request (or in the AO3 request you chose, if there was more than one). Optional tags and Dear Santa letters are suggestions only.

Requirements:

Fic must be at least 1000 words in length (AO3's word count).

Podficced works must also be at least 1000 words in length.

Vids must be at least 1.5 minutes long.

Visual art should be equal in effort and time to a well-crafted 1,000 word story.

All gift works must be beta-ed. No exceptions. We want our gift recipients to have the highest quality dSSS gifts!

For betas, please check the previous betas post in upcoming weeks for additional comments by beta volunteers. You can also check our challenge profile for the rules and FAQ.

Do NOT contact your recipient if you have questions. Contact us at dsss.admin (at) gmail (dot) com and we will help you!

IOW, secret things stay secret. Optional things are optional. Required things are required.

Any questions or confusion, ALWAYS ASK A MOD!

If asking your question in a comment here could reveal your assignment or recipient, please DO NOT comment here! EMAIL us dsss.admin (at) gmail (dot) com.

For any other questions or concerns, please email us at dsss.admin (at) gmail (dot) com and we'll get back to you
as soon as we can.

NOT Required

For Gift-makers:

Holiday or Christmas-themed giftworks are NOT required!
(Given that DSSS is an international and multicultural exchange, they may not even be welcome.)

Please check your recipient’s requests on AO3 and list of squicks (if they have one).
Alternatively, see their optional Dear Santa letter if there is one, to determine their squicks.

For Recipients:

If you have a preference regarding December holidays, please mention that in your Dear Santa letter, so your Giftmaker knows.

Bonus works/treats:

If you finish your dSSS gift early and have an idea for a bonus work or treat, that would be great!

But you are only required to make one gift work for your recipient.

Also, until your primary gift work is completed, beta-ed, and posted on AO3… please do not make or post any bonus work/treats.

A "treats' round is in the future – in upcoming weeks, keep an eye on this community or the dSSS Tumblr for more information.

Finally:

Thank you for signing up to dSSS 2018! We're excited to see so many new faces alongside many old friends! Go forth and create!

The deadline has past, the submissions are in (except for a couple of pinch hits)!  Congratulations to all!  *\o/*

.....now what? you may be wondering.

Well, the collection will go live on the night of the 24th.  At that time, you'll be able to read/view/listen to all the delicious gifts, but the makers' names will still be secret until January 1st.

Between now and then, here are two things you can do to keep the dSSS excitement burning.

1) Give your posted fanwork(s) another proof-reading pass.  Catch those last couple of pesky typos, lost commas, missing or extraneous words.  Make sure you have not accidentally included Seekrit info, such as your own name or your beta's name.  I promise you, there is nearly always something to find! :)

2) Make treats for your fellow participants, pinch-hitters, and mods!  Go to the AO3 collection for this exchange, view everyone's requests, and fulfill one of them.
Detailed instructions here.

Our two pinch-hitters are verushka70 and dance_across.  Your mods are DesireeArmfeldt, Ride_Forever and squidgie.  They may comment on the
main treats post with requests, though so far, none of us has actually done so. :)

Treats are basically like regular gifts, with a few slight differences:

1. No minimums for word count or artistic effort.
2. Our quality standards for all works are still in place, including spelling and grammar. Small gifts are still gifts, after all! Treats that don't meet DSSS quality standards may be removed at the discretion of the mods.  However, because of the short turn-around time for Treats, you are not required to have them beta'ed -- though we still strongly encourage you to do so.
3. Allowing other gift formats not named in someone's request and relaxing the length/effort requirement are the only rules changes we're permitting. We expect Treats to respect the recipient's requested characters/relationships and any DNW info (including Dear Santa letters).
4. Art, vidlet, or podfic Treats must be hosted on the DSSS servers. Like all DSSS works, Treats are SEEKRIT until Reveal!
5. Remember to use the "DSSS Treat" tag on your treat.

Treats!

Hi all!  First, a friendly reminder that primary giftworks are due on Saturday, December 16 by 11:59 Chicago Time -- that's slightly less than 6 days from now.  *\o/*

If you discover that you're not going to be able to make the deadline, please notify the mods by emailing dsss.admin AT gmail DOT com as soon as possible, so we can find a pinch-hitter to take over your assignment.

Remember, all primary giftworks need to be beta'ed -- whether they are text, visual art, or recorded.  It's a good idea to give your work an extra proofread after you've posted it, as well -- typos happen to the best of us, and sometimes AO3 does unexpected things to formatting! :)

--------------------------
Your friendly neighborhood DSSS mods are delighted to announce the commencement of DSSS Treats! Treats are meant to be fun, small, seekrit, and 100% optional. If you have no time for anything beyond your assigned work, no worries! Focus on that (please!), but once you're done making your assigned gift, you are welcome to dive into DSSS at large with drabbles, drawbles, vidlets, and podficlets! Here's how this will work:

Treats Deadline is December 31st!
TREATS may be posted at any point from after you post your assigned giftwork until 12/31/17, 11:59pm Chicago time
! Yes, we're allowing Treats right up through New Years Eve!

NOTE: YOU MUST POST YOUR ASSIGNED GIFTWORK FIRST! We review all works as they are posted so we can keep track of unfulfilled assignments. If you post a treat without already having posted your assigned giftwork, we will delete the Treat from the collection. POST YOUR ASSIGNED WORK FIRST.

Okay! Assigned DSSS work done? WONDERFUL! Read on!

Who can I make Treats for?
• You may make Treats for anyone participating in DSSS 2017: registered participants, pinch hitters who heroically took on an assignment, and the mods. When works go live, the "Guess the Creators!" post will have a list of everyone who made works, including pinch hitters.
• You may make additional works for your assigned recipient.
• After works go live, you may make companion pieces for any of the gifts in the collection. (These should be complementary works, rather than remixes. If you have any doubts, email the mods and ask!)
• You may make companion pieces in response to the DSSS giftwork(s) you receive. (Again, think complementary works instead of remixes.)

How do I know what to make? Aren't requests hidden?

As of now, everyone's signup requests are visible
, so you can go and look at all the prompts to see what inspires you! Treats don't have to be in the requested format(s) – whereas the assigned work absolutely does. If you see a prompt that inspires you in a different format, go for it!

What about pinch hitters? Do they get to make requests?

If you have been assigned a pinch-hit, you are welcome to comment on this post with a request, so that people wanting to make you a Treat have an idea what you might like.  Note that this doesn't guarantee you will get a Treat.  Mods may also post requests as comments to this post. If you want to make a Treat for a pinch hitter or a mod, check here to see if they've left guidelines.

Special Rules for Treats:
1. IMPORTANT: Carefully follow the special posting instructions for Treats in the next section.
2. Brevity is fine! No minimums for word count or artistic effort.
4. Allowing other gift formats not named in someone's request and relaxing the length/effort requirement are the only rules changes we're permitting. We expect Treats to respect the recipient's requested characters/relationships and any DNW info (including Dear Santa letters).
5. Art, vidlet, or podfic Treats must be hosted on the DSSS servers. Like all DSSS works, Treats are SEEKRIT until Reveal!

Special upload instructions for TreatsRead more... )

Defaulters MAY NOT post Treats (with some exceptions) Please understand that participants must fulfill their assignments for DSSS to succeed. It doesn't seem fair to us for someone to default, leaving the mods to scramble to find a pinch hitter and the pinch hitter to scramble to put a gift together that matches a specific prompt on short notice, only for the defaulter to blithely create optional treats at the end without doing their originally assigned work. Granted, in certain cases we may offer exceptions (e.g. family emergencies, funerals, etc., and please do email us if this applies to you!), but if you default on your assigned DSSS work, please do not expect to post treats instead. Everyone posting their assigned work is our top priority.

Companion Piece Permissions
Within DSSS, we're working under the assumption that gifts are good and more gifts are welcome. If you write your recipient a story, then a DSSS podficcer could conceivably record that story as a Treat for your recipient, or an artist could make you a cover to go with your fic, etc. As mods, we are entirely on board with this, because more gifts, more creativity, more Due South works, YAY! However, if you have concerns, such as really, really not wanting anyone to record your story as a podfic, please email the mods and we'll reply with further instructions. We admit we hope everyone will take the happy potential for more gifts in the spirit of the December gift-giving season, but we're glad to work with you to respect your comfort zone.

So, to sum up:
Optional Treats are optional. Treats posted by people who have not yet posted their assigned work will be deleted. Everyone's requests are now viewable here
. You can post treats alllllllll the way through New Year's Eve, Chicago time. And the length and format rules are relaxed for Treats.

Please email us at dsss.admin@gmail.com if you have ANY questions or concerns. We know this may be a little confusing, so ask at will! You guys are awesome. Thanks for being awesome!

Have a wonderful DSSS! <3

If you've participated in this year's due South Seekrit Santa, or even if you just joined us along for the ride, but wanted to make treats for the people who participated, from the artists and authors to the mods, you should know that the collection will close for treats soon!  You have until 11:59pm Central (Chicago) time, 12/31/2016.  After that, the collection will be closed to new entries.

So post your treats, bask in the glory of all the fanworks that this year's fest helped foster, and let's all ring in the New Year together!

To our wonderful Treat-Makers:

Do not panic if you can't find your Treat draft after you upload it. This is not BEARS -- you should be able to access it through "edit work," and if not, mods can help you regain access.
