Hello, fannishly sexy dSSSers! The 2021 dSSS collection on AO3 is now open for posting. BUT there are a few exceptions: Please do not post the following without talking to us admins first --
* fanart
* podfic
* vids
We have special instructions noted below for these three gift categories.
Reminder 1: All fanworks must be beta-ed!
Your fanwork is a gift for another fan, so it should be the best possible quality. Plus, we all need a second pair of eyes to catch what we've missed (it's normal to lose objectivity about one's fanwork, especially if they have been in the works for a while, lol)!
If you do not have a beta, check the post here for volunteer betas. If no one there can beta your fanwork, please email dsss.admin@gmail.com.
Plus, don't forget: your beta may also be your bonus, unofficial cheerleader, with compliments on your fanwork included with their beta correction notes. The vast majority don't just tell you what needs to be fixed -- they'll also let you know what's great about your fanwork!
Reminder 2: If you need a beta, don't ask your gift recipient to beta your fanwork, lol! Secret things should stay Seekrit! Plus, that will ruin the surprise for them.
Reminder 3: Please don't discuss your dSSS gift for your recipient anywhere online, with anyone. Because, again: secret things should stay secret!
In 2018, one of the dSSS participants experienced the AO3 "Reveals Bug" when posting their into the dSSS 2018 collection. We sure don't want that to happen again, and we are so sorry -- if we could do something about it on our end, we totally would.
But it's on AO3's side, so we have no control over it. As a result, each individual participant must use the posting steps below (not that much different from the usual; just a few extra steps).
If you would rather look at a tutorial on the following steps for posting your work, with pictures, please visit the tutorial at the Once Upon a Fic Exchange AO3 Reveals Bug work around.
Now, how to post your work:
1. Login to AO3.
1A. Select My Assignments from the pull-down menu at the top of the page, or the left side navigation options.
1B. Choose "fulfill assignment" and create a draft of your fanwork. Make sure you select collection dSSS 2021!
2. Select "Preview" at the bottom of the page.
3. After checking the Preview of your work, select "Save As Draft" at the bottom of the screen.
4. 3 messages should now appear at the top of your Saved Without Posting work.
4A. If the 3rd message is,
"This work is part of an ongoing collection and will be revealed soon!
You can find details here"
Then you can select "Post Work" in the next step, Step 5.
4B. If you do NOT see the 3rd message "This work is part of an ongoing collection," then the AO3 Reveals Bug got you! Follow the next Step, 4C.
4C. If the reveals bug got you in Step 4B, do not select "Post Work." Just save your fanwork as a draft, and email dsss.admin(at)gmail.com to let us know. We will take a look at it.
5. Those who got the 3rd message ("This work is part of an ongoing...") in Step 4A, can now Post Work! Next, do the following two steps:
5A. Edit your fanwork one more time.
5B. This time, choose "Post"
You're done! Please keep in mind, though, that your work will not show up right away -- it goes into a queue for mod review before it gets accepted.
Any questions/problems/concerns, please email dsss.admin(at)gmail.com.
^Fanartists: please email your fanart images, as an attachment, to dSSS.admin@gmail.com.
If it's beta-ed and ready to post, we'll put it on the dsss.admin cloud space. Then we'll send you the link to your fanwork. Once you get the link from us, follow the instructions above, and use that link post your 2021 dSSS assignment on AO3.
^^ Podficcers and vidders: Same as fanartists -- please email your podfics or vids to dsss.admin@gmail.com. We'll put your work on our cloud space, and send you the link to paste into your AO3 submission for your 2021 dSSS gift recipient. Once you get the link from us, follow the posting instructions above, and use the link we sent you to post your 2021 dSSS assignment on AO3.
The first reason we want you to submit your fanwork to us, is to maintain your anonymity. It's a Seekrit Santa exchange. So...
If the link in your dSSS gift goes to your own comm/space/Vimeo/YouTube channel, your anonymity is blown and your secret identity as creator of that gift is no longer secret. True, your authorship is supposed to be revealed eventually... just not until January 1, 2021!
So help us keep your identity hidden until Reveal Day! Let us host your fanart, podfic(s), and vids.
The second reason we want you to send us your non-fic fanwork is because we've lost dSSS fanworks before.
* twelve years of archived dSSS fanworks were lost when the crocolanthus server went
down a couple years ago -- apparently, never to return (the domain name was for sale earlier this year).
* loss of countless fanart when Photobucket put up a paywall and held everyone's photos & images for ransom -- there is still evidence of that all over AO3. TinyPic too.
So, please send your art/podfic/vid to dSSS.admin@gmail.com and we will upload to our cloud space, then send you the link to post.
You can change that link in your dSSS gift later, after creators are revealed on January
1, 2022. But we hope that you will consider not doing so. Why?
We don't want your lovely gifts disappearing
We know, stuff happens. Fen move on; get super busy IRL; get banned from sites; have to delete stuff from their own space to make room for newer/additional stuff; may need to disappear from online to elude a cyber-stalker, etc.
Or something life-altering happens (as we sadly suspect may be the case with Sprat and crocolanthus, but may never be sure, as all efforts at communication have never received any reply). The fen falls off the face of the Internet; then their web sites & journals stop being updated and fall into disrepair, sometimes unusability, or are even deleted if they don't log in for a certain amount of time according to server TOS.
We want your dSSS contribution to be available for anybody and everybody on AO3 now and in the future. Hosting an ongoing library of visual and auditory dSSS fanworks, going forward, will fulfill that mission.
Thank you kindly!
